On educating our kids

Some interesting articles related to education came up this week on Twitter. Do give them a read.

From Smithsonian and via @KimElmose on Twitter

The country’s achievements in education have other nations doing their homework

From the Guardian and via @euan on Twitter:

Kids today need a licence to tinker

Forget the old approach of the national curriculum, we need to open young minds to the creative possibilities of computing

UPDATE 5 September 2011

After posting the first two links, I came across two other links that are too important to ignore if we’re talking about kids and education.

The 7-Lesson Schoolteacher

by John Taylor Gatto, New Society Publishers, 1992. Shared by @twomasc on Twitter.

Back to the (wrong) school

Then this post by Seth Godin popped up on Twitter thanks to @uxprinciples.

I feel it echoes much of what Gatto wrote nearly 20 years ago. I shared the Gatto article with a colleague today. He was ecstatic - thought the writing was spot on.
